Why pH decides whether a 2% BHA does anything

The short answer

Salicylic acid only exfoliates in its uncharged free-acid form, and how much stays uncharged depends on the product's pH. At pH three most of it is active; at pH five very little is. Since brands publish concentration but not pH, the number on the label is only half the specification.

Every chemical exfoliant on the shelf leads with a percentage. It is the one specification the category has standardised on, and it is genuinely useful. It is also, on its own, not enough to tell you what a product will do.

What does pH have to do with exfoliation?

Salicylic acid exfoliates in its uncharged, protonated form. In that state it is lipophilic, moves into the follicle, and loosens the desmosomes holding dead corneocytes together. Deprotonated — as salicylate — it is charged, water-loving, and largely stays where you put it.

Which form dominates is set by pH. The acid’s pKa is around 2.97, meaning at that pH the split is fifty-fifty. Move up a single pH unit and roughly ninety percent is neutralised. Move up two and the product is, functionally, no longer an exfoliant, whatever the front of the bottle says.

Why is this formula only eight ingredients long?

Because restraint is the strategy. Water, two solvents, the acid, a solubiliser, a leaf extract, sodium hydroxide and a chelator.

The sodium hydroxide is the tell. It has no cosmetic function here at all. It is in the formula purely to raise the pH from where the acid naturally sits to whatever target the formulator chose — low enough to work, high enough to tolerate. Everything else in the list exists to keep a poorly water-soluble acid dissolved without disturbing that number.

So what should you look at instead?

Three things, in order.

First, whether the brand publishes a pH at all. A brand that does is telling you it has a number it is willing to stand behind.

Second, the length of the ingredient list. Short lists around an acid are usually a sign the formulator prioritised the acid’s chemistry over texture.

Third, your own frequency. Tolerance is set far more by how often you use an exfoliant than by the percentage in it. Two or three times a week is where most skin lands, regardless of what the bottle allows.

What this analysis cannot tell you

The pH of this specific product is not published, and we have not measured it. The formula’s architecture — the presence of a dedicated pH adjuster and almost nothing else — is consistent with a deliberately controlled low pH, but that is an inference from the ingredient list, not a measurement.

Anyone telling you the exact free acid value of a product they have not tested is guessing.

Common questions

What pH should a salicylic acid product be?
Roughly 3.0 to 4.0 for meaningful exfoliation. Below 3.0 the irritation cost rises faster than the benefit; above about 4.5 most of the acid is neutralised and the product behaves more like a mild toner than an exfoliant.
How can I find out a product's pH?
Usually you cannot. A few brands publish it, some will answer a direct email, and inexpensive pH strips give a rough reading at home. Treat an unpublished pH as missing information rather than as a bad sign.
Is a higher percentage of salicylic acid better?
Not reliably. A 2% product at pH 3.2 delivers far more active acid than a 4% product at pH 5. Concentration and pH have to be read together, which is exactly what the label prevents you from doing.
